Arriving in Pitigliano by climbing the SS 74 Maremma road from the coast, one can't help but notice the very particular houses perched on the edge of a huge and sheer spur of tufa stone.
The cliff on which Pitigliano stands is surrounded on three sides by ravines full ofcaves that have been hewn out of the tufa.
Pitigliano is typical of the towns found in the Maremma district around Grosseto, although the fact that it is entirely built on a huge tufa mass makes it unique and one of the most interesting places to visit in the area.
The many traditional wine cellars/bars, hewn out of tufa are an added attraction as all serve the town's well-known local wines.
