Giannutri is the most southern island in the Tuscan Archipelago, and is part of the commune of Giglio Island despite being situated some 6 miles south of it. It is approx. 3 km long and just over 500 m. wide, with a total surface area of 2,3 km.sq. It has two landing stages: Cala Spalmatoio on the south-eastern side and Cala Maestra on the north west, close to the remains of a beautiful villa from the 2nd century BC, built by the Domizi Enobardi family.
Scuba diving
The waters around this island are popular with scuba divers thanks to the vertical underwater cliffs covered in different species of coral -including horny coral - tunicate and sponges. Much of the seabed here has now been designated as a type"A" protected area, (which means boats, fishing and diving are banned). On the one hand, this has led to a huge increase in the number of fish, but on the other, it is now difficult to find a good place to dive. That said, the extensive so-called Poseidon Prairie and two shipwrecks - the Anna Bianca (at 45-50 m) and the Nasim (at 60 m) are good diving options.
