Pre-historic hunters who lived
in the Uccellina caves liked it and the Etruscans
and Romans liked it enough to turn it into a major sea-port and
build imposing villas with swimming pools. Medieval Lords liked it too as
did the Siennese who fortified the town and the Spanish who further
strengthened its defences.
It has lost nothing of its appeal today; people remain enchanted by its
untamed rocky shoreline and
the endless blue of the sea
not to mention the the green
of its fields and Mediterranean brush – and
the fierceness of the warm prevailing wind.
